Oil Council

Historical Overview

The Oil Council is a European-leading business network for oil and gas executives. The association promotes knowledge and thought leadership across the energy industry by providing informed commentary, cutting-edge analysis and market intelligence. Through annual Assemblies and e-media they bring together influential executives to tackle key business challenges, champion best practice, develop strategic partnerships and encourage new business development while showcasing new investment opportunities.

The Oil Council has a strong European presence, hosting regular conferences and awards ceremonies on a yearly basis. Until 2010 however, the association had yet to penetrate the US market.

In August 2010, M Group was contracted as the Oil Council’s agency-of-record to build a North American brand for the association, as well as raise visibility for, garner media attendance at, and manage their first US conference in October 2010 — the 2010 Energy Capital Assembly Americas.

Using the US Assembly as a launch pad for North American media initiatives, our initial communications strategy consisted of conducting background briefings with top-tier oil & gas, business and financial media as an introduction to the Council. As a follow-on, we publicized the event through news bureau activities and garnered onsite media via M Group targeted press invites.

Lastly, our media strategy consisted of hosting a preamble event — an invite-only media breakfast with the Oil Council’s representatives and five member company executives providing their thoughts on the current outlook for the oil & gas sector.

Results

Our short-term media relations strategy and implementation of that strategy for the Oil Council was a huge success. In three months time we built relationships for the Council with just about every major US trade and financial media outlet, generating awareness of the Oil Council as a World-leading business network, not just European. M Group has built a sustainable platform of credible awareness from which we will use as a springboard for 2011 proactive initiatives.

Our preamble, invite-only press breakfast was a great success. The CEO of The Oil Council was joined by an array of special guests from the oil & gas and finance communities, who shared their thoughts on the current state of the industry as well as their outlook for the coming year with representatives of many leading industry publications, including Thomson Reuters, Associated Press, Bloomberg News, Platts, Energy Risk Magazine, American Oil & Gas Report, Energy Intelligence Group and the Financial Times.

The 2010 Energy Capital Assembly Americas saw a press list that was second to none, as we used our media contacts and confirmed attendance from editors and reporters from top-tier outlets such as American Oil & Gas, Barron’s, Platts, Dow Jones, the Wall Street Journal, Energy Intelligence Group, Thomson Reuters, Bloomberg, Financial Times, Oil & Gas Investor, Investor’s Business Daily, Business Week, and more.

With media and influencer relationships in place, the Oil Council is posed for increased recognition and significant growth within the US market for the calendar year 2011.
